Our Medical Future: Volume-Driven or Service-Driven?

Access to doctors is getting more difficult. And when we do see our primary doctors, we’re seen for an average of 7 minutes. Not enough time to adequately address the most important issues, let alone focus on wellness and prevention.

Our insurance premiums are escalating. Yet doctors are making less money with dropping reimbursements and rising expenses due to insurance-related overhead and malpractice costs.

What does our medical future look like?

As dysfunctional as the current healthcare system is, we do have choices – both as patients and as physicians. We can wait for policy and administrative changes from the top down, or we can work on an organic level, from the ground up – one physician, one practice, one patient at a time.

We are coming to a fork in the road. One path takes us towards a volume-driven model, the other to a service-driven model. In other words, a physician extender model or a concierge medicine model.
